Jan Winch McCarty

My aim is to facilitate a safe and confidential process that will empower you to access inner strengths and resources in order to make meaningful life changes of your choice. You may be feeling anxious, stressed or depressed, and may know the reason you are upset, or you may be feeling worried and unsure of why things are getting to you. You may be grieving the loss of a loved one through death or separation and wonder how you will manage.

My experience grew from counselling people in both hospital and community settings, to the establishing of my private practice. I have been a counsellor with employee assistance programmes since 1995, helping people from a variety of cultures and backgrounds with regard to both their work and personal life. I also supervise counsellors and mental health workers.

Specialisms arising from training and experience:

Relationships: Changes and difficulties can occur at any stage of life, affecting self-esteem and self-confidence, both at work and with friends and family. I see mostly adult individuals and couples in my practice.

Abuse and trauma: I see people for therapy who have been traumatised and abused as children. I have also facilitated groups of survivors of trauma and co facilitated training workshops for counsellors.

Adoption: My experience is working with all those affected by adoption in the family and have seen the sometimes profound impact on relationship with self and others.

Cultural: My experience is of helping people of many cultures in counselling and psychotherapy. I have lived in New Zealand since I was a child so have a strong connection to this country. But I have also travelled and lived overseas as an adult, living in Australia and Japan. These experiences help my understanding of what it is like to live and adapt to a new culture and environment.

Spiritual Values: This is an area many people want to explore and discuss or maybe would like to bring more depth and meaning into their life, which I am very comfortable with exploring.

Aging: I often encounter the idea that aging should be positive, which it is, but this can be contradictory and minimizes the benefits of addressing something that affects all of us at some time. At any age and stage in life, adjustment to change and self-acceptance can be the key to a more satisfying and happier life.
